The 2025 Southeast Asian Games began at Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok on 9 December. Security for Cambodian athletes and staff was increased due to recent border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia.
Six Cambodian civilians and three Thai soldiers were killed in renewed fighting over the disputed border. Cambodia withdrew approximately half of its athletes and pulled out of eight events including football and wrestling.
Thailand's deputy prime minister confirmed the country would ensure the highest level of security for Cambodian athletes. Specific security measures were not disclosed, but personnel will be deployed to protect them during the Games.
