A phased programme of structural repair work is due to begin on the A6 Glenshane Road at Carn, near Dungiven, with the Department for Infrastructure warning motorists to expect delays during the scheme. The work is intended to maintain carriageway and drainage infrastructure at the location. DfI has set out an initial traffic-management arrangement followed by further stages involving a culvert and an embankment.
At the start of the programme, the Belfast-bound hard shoulder will be converted into a temporary running lane for around 400 metres. That arrangement forms part of the measures being used to manage traffic while the work proceeds. Road users are being asked to factor possible disruption into their journeys through the area, particularly while the temporary lane layout is in operation.
DfI has described the scheme as a phased package of structural, drainage and embankment works. The initial change to the road layout will be followed by a stage involving culvert replacement. A culvert is part of the drainage infrastructure at the site, and its replacement is among the specified elements of the planned work. The department has also identified embankment repairs as a later stage.
The programme therefore goes beyond surface-level work on the route, combining carriageway-related measures with drainage and structural repairs. The department’s stated purpose is to maintain the infrastructure at Carn. The sequence allows the early traffic arrangement to be put in place before the later repair activity. Motorists should remain alert to the temporary layout and to any delays associated with the phased works.
The A6 traffic management will affect the Belfast-bound side of the road over the approximately 400-metre section identified by DfI. The hard shoulder will serve as a running lane rather than its usual function for the duration of that arrangement. Drivers are advised to proceed with care through the works and to make additional time for journeys on the Glenshane Road near Dungiven.
DfI has not presented the works as a single-stage intervention. Its notice identifies the temporary running-lane measure, culvert replacement and embankment repairs as parts of the overall programme. The department’s warning of potential delay remains in place as the work starts. People travelling through Carn should take account of the changing traffic conditions while the repair scheme is carried out.
