The Belfast Health Trust acknowledged that a patient complaint lodged in 2023 led to its notification of the Royal College of Physicians regarding the practice of a cardiologist who fitted specialist heart devices between 2007 and 2023.
Following an inquiry by the Royal College of Physicians, the trust confirmed that approximately 670 patient records have been examined as part of an ongoing investigation into the work of Dr Ernest Lau.
The review process identified that more than 160 individuals with advanced heart conditions may have received Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy implants without sufficient justification.
Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy involves the fitting of a small implant designed to manage heart rhythm and pumping difficulties, yet the trust stated these treatments were not always clinically indicated for the patients involved.
The medical director expressed regret for any distress caused and confirmed that those affected will receive correspondence regarding their specific situation.
While the trust noted that 29 patients have already been scheduled for a look back review appointment to assess historical care, it warned that completing this process will require several months.
Officials emphasised that no immediate action is required from patients treated by Dr Ernest Lau and that the implanted devices remain safe.
When questioned in July about why Dr Ernest Lau continued to receive a full salary despite not being engaged in clinical work or seeing patients, the trust stated internal human resources procedures were still underway.
