Belfast swimmer Jack McMillan helped Great Britain win the men's 4x200m freestyle relay on the opening day of pool competition at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris. Britain touched first in seven minutes 1.52 seconds, ahead of France and Germany.
McMillan raced alongside James Guy, Duncan Scott and Matt Richards in the final. The quartet kept Britain in the leading positions throughout the race before securing the first men's relay title of the meet. McMillan, who trains at the University of Stirling, has become a regular member of Britain's major-championship relay group.
The result was one of two British relay victories on Monday. Freya Anderson, Leah Schlosshan, Abbie Wood and Freya Colbert won the women's 4x200m freestyle in 7:45.93. Hungary took silver and the neutral athlete team finished third.
There was also a bronze medal for Max Litchfield in the men's 400m individual medley. He finished in 4:11.58 behind champion Ilya Borodin, who set a championship record of 4:08.17, and Italy's Alberto Razzetti.
Irish swimmers also opened their programme in Paris. Jack Kelly broke the Irish men's 100m breaststroke record in the heats and lowered it again to 58.90 in the semi-final to qualify for Tuesday's final. Belfast's Lottie Cullen produced a personal best of 2:12.22 in the women's 200m backstroke semi-final but did not advance.
The swimming programme continues through Sunday at the Olympic Aquatics Centre in Saint-Denis. McMillan's gold gives the Belfast athlete another senior international relay medal after his previous championship successes with the British team.
