The Tobacco and Vapes Bill receives parliamentary approval, restricting cigarette and tobacco sales to individuals born after 31 December 2008 in England. The law aims to establish a smoke-free generation by preventing new smokers from accessing tobacco products.
The legislation will take effect on 1 January 2027, following royal assent, which is expected to be a formality. It extends current restrictions by setting a permanent minimum purchase age based on birth date.
The government will retain authority to regulate vapes, nicotine products, packaging, and flavours under the new law. Officials state the measure is intended to reduce smoking-related deaths and long-term health harm.
