The UK government has introduced a ban on all major social media platforms for children under 16, including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat, and X. The restriction also extends to livestreaming and the use of romantic chatbots by under-18s.
The government cited concerns over mental health, bullying, and the harmful effects of online exposure on children. It stated that nine in 10 parents supported a minimum age of 16 for social media access based on a recent consultation.
The policy follows similar measures in Australia and includes separate restrictions on gaming apps, such as disabling chat features with strangers. The government said it had consulted widely and considered evidence before implementing the ban.
