The Solong, carrying 14 crew members, collided with the US tanker Stena Immaculate on 10 March 2025 off the East Yorkshire coast. The impact occurred despite the tanker being visible on the Solong's radar for 36 minutes prior to the crash.
The captain, Vladimir Motin, failed to maintain a proper lookout, did not use available means to assess collision risk, and did not take evasive action. He also did not sound the alarm, summon assistance, or initiate a crash stop before the collision.
Motin was found to have lied about his actions during the trial, including denying he had been asleep or left his post. The judge described his account as implausible and concluded the death was wholly avoidable.
