A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect in Gaza on 10 October 2025, following approval by the Israeli war cabinet. The Israel Defense Forces completed their withdrawal to the agreed lines within Gaza.
Thousands of Palestinians began returning to areas of the Gaza Strip after the ceasefire took effect. Many displaced people walked with belongings toward their homes, which were often destroyed in the recent offensive.
All remaining hostages were expected to be released within days as part of the ceasefire agreement. The U.S.-brokered deal aimed to pause the fighting and end the two-year war that began in 2023.
