The Chancellor has confirmed that the Budget will take place on Wednesday 28 October, setting the date for the government’s next major statement on tax and spending plans.
John Healey MP, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, announced the date on Friday afternoon in a video message. He said the Budget would be his first as Chancellor and would be aimed at giving businesses and families more stability as they plan for the future.
The announcement comes with the government saying it is working to restore hope and support communities across Britain. In the message, Mr Healey said ministers had begun efforts in the previous two weeks to kickstart growth in every postcode, while backing British jobs, skills and businesses.
He also said the government had provided some breathing space for families and businesses that felt squeezed. The Chancellor described the forthcoming Budget as one that would move money and power out of Westminster and into every postcode around Britain.
Mr Healey said the Budget would be built on fiscal discipline and would meet the government’s fiscal rules. No further measures were set out in the announcement, which was focused on confirming the Budget date and the broad approach ministers intend to take.
HM Treasury has also launched a Budget Representation Portal for comments on existing policy to be submitted for consideration before the Budget. The portal is due to close at 23:59 on Wednesday 9 September, after which representations will be collated and shared with Treasury policy officials.
