A draft proposal to reshape traffic patterns across Derry City has been released for public scrutiny as part of a broader transport strategy.

The consultation period runs until 25 January 2027 and concerns the first phase of the Eastern Transport Plan, which targets the city centre and surrounding metropolitan area.

Under the suggested changes, a uniform 20mph speed limit would be implemented throughout Derry City.

The Bridge Street area adjacent to the old Assembly Rooms is set to be converted into a new public realm space.

Royal Avenue and Donegall Place will see traffic flow reversed to two-way movement to support an expanded Glider service connecting north and south Belfast.

Donegall Square West, currently used by Metro buses, would be closed to vehicular traffic to create another pedestrianised zone.

The full details are set out in the 270-page Eastern Transport Plan, external (ETP), which is now open for examination.

Officials have confirmed that the plan remains under review while the consultation period continues.
