The Household Electricity Discount will be implemented across Northern Ireland beginning on 6 October, delivering a one-off £63 reduction for approximately 860,000 homes.
Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald confirmed the scheme is designed to support households without requiring them to meet specific income thresholds or demonstrate particular energy usage patterns.
The financial relief will be applied automatically by electricity suppliers and does not depend on customers applying for assistance separately.
Bill-paying residents will see the credit appear directly on their accounts under the label NIRO & VAT Govt Credit, while those using pre-pay or keypad meters will receive the benefit through their standard top-up process.
The initiative mirrors two existing measures currently operating in Great Britain: a temporary six-month reduction in Value Added Tax on domestic electricity and the elimination of certain consumer levies.
According to the Minister, negotiations were conducted to secure additional funding that enables this combined single payment structure for 2026.
The announcement follows recent applications opening for a distinct means-tested programme offering £100 vouchers to some heating oil users last week.
Support for the scheme is being provided by the Department of Finance within the Executive Government.
