Eight participants are undertaking a 12-month heritage skills programme combining formal training with on-site work placements.
The All-Ireland Heritage Skills Programme is delivered with partners including the King's Foundation, National Museums NI, CITB NI and the Heritage Council.
The training leads to an NVQ through the Northern Ireland Heritage Skills Centre at Moira Depot.
The Department for Communities said its Conservation Works Team has recruited eight apprentices and plans a further three posts.
