Residents, developers and public bodies are being invited to comment on proposed changes to the way planning applications are classified and processed in Northern Ireland.

The eight-week consultation examines the classes and thresholds contained in the Planning (Development Management) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2015. Those rules help determine how different proposals move through the planning system.

The Department for Infrastructure said the review is intended to reflect current and emerging development trends and improve the handling of applications. It forms part of a wider Planning Improvement Programme being developed with councils and other partners.

The consultation asks whether the existing categories remain appropriate and whether revised thresholds could support a more efficient process while preserving the scrutiny required for larger or more complex proposals.

Responses can be submitted through the NI Direct consultation portal until 5pm on October 9. The department will consider the evidence received before deciding whether to bring forward amendments to the regulations.
