Northern Ireland’s Executive has written jointly to the Prime Minister seeking an in-person meeting on what it describes as mounting financial pressures, including the funding available for public services and the position on the 2026-27 Budget. The Executive Office published the letter on 13 August.
The letter was signed by all Executive ministers, according to The Executive Office. It calls for an early meeting with the Prime Minister and seeks what the ministers describe as a fair funding envelope for Northern Ireland.
The Executive’s request places funding for public services at the centre of the proposed discussion. The published statement says ministers want to address the pressures facing services alongside the broader question of a sustainable budget position.
Ministers also say the absence of an agreed Budget for 2026-27 is limiting departmental planning. That is the Executive’s stated assessment of the current position, set out in its letter to the Prime Minister rather than an agreed resolution with the UK Government.
The call is for a meeting in person, not solely further correspondence. The Executive has asked for the meeting to take place early, with the letter linking the timing to the need to address financial pressures and the effect it says they are having on planning.
A fair funding envelope is among the specific outcomes sought by the ministers. The Executive Office’s publication frames this as a request to the Prime Minister, and the letter does not itself establish a new funding settlement or an agreed Budget for Northern Ireland.
