Best played in the 1968 final where Manchester United defeated Benfica 4-1 after extra time at Wembley. He scored the team's second goal following a dribble past the Benfica goalkeeper.

The auction was conducted by Bonhams in London, where the medal was sold as part of a collection of sports memorabilia. A shirt worn by the 1974 World Cup Final referee Jack Taylor sold for £28,160.
