TJ Morris has secured planning permission to construct a Home Bargains outlet on the site of the former Lisnagelvin leisure centre in Derry.

The development project involves replacing the vacant structure that has stood empty since its closure in 2015.

Council records confirm the sale of the property and adjoining land to TJ Morris earlier this year at a price of £2.5m.

Inaltus, the town planning consultancy agents preparing the application, stated the scheme would deliver significant economic activity for the locality.

The proposed store is expected to generate between 80 and 100 permanent retail positions upon completion.

An additional workforce of 80 to 100 individuals will be employed during the construction phase of the project.

Capital expenditure figures submitted with the application indicate a total investment value of £8.5m for the new facility.

The planning committee of Derry City and Strabane District Council is scheduled to review the submission.
