An engaged couple seeking a romantic walk on Achill Island found themselves stranded against a coastal cliff face during gale-force winds on Monday afternoon.
The Irish Coast Guard launched a dramatic rescue operation after standard access methods proved impossible due to the rough sea conditions and high winds.
Initial attempts to reach the individuals by boat were unsuccessful, forcing operators to abandon that approach in favour of alternative extraction techniques.
A helicopter mission was also deemed unviable under the prevailing weather conditions, leaving ground-based rope rescue as the only viable option.
The pair, who had agreed to tie the knot shortly before heading to the remote beauty spot, were secured and hauled approximately 150m (490 ft) to safety.
Once at the summit, they faced a separate challenge of navigating a two-kilometre descent down the hill to reach a waiting ambulance.
Paramedics attended to them on site before transporting them to a hospital for medical checks, though no admission was required.
The incident highlights the dangers inherent in coastal locations where vehicle access is restricted and weather can change rapidly.
