Israel appointed Michael Lotem as its first ambassador to Somaliland on 15 April 2026. The role is designated as non-resident, meaning Lotem will not be based in Somaliland.
Lotem previously served as Israel's ambassador to Kenya, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan. His appointment reflects Israel's diplomatic engagement with Somaliland after mutual recognition was announced in December 2025.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and operates as a de facto independent entity. The Somali federal government continues to regard it as part of its territory and opposes external recognition.
