Passenger train derailed by landslide near Shap, Cumbria, injuring four

A landslide caused a passenger train to derail on the West Coast Main Line near Shap, Cumbria, on 3 November 2025, resulting in four injuries. Recovery operations and investigations are ongoing.

The 04:28 Avanti West Coast service from Glasgow Central to London Euston derailed at Shap in Cumbria at 06:10 on 3 November 2025. The incident occurred due to a landslide affecting the railway line.

The derailed Pendolino train was rerailed in the early hours of 4 November and moved by rescue locomotives to Carlisle. It was stabled in the station sidings for later return to a depot.

Network Rail and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch are conducting an investigation into the cause of the derailment. Services north of Preston remain suspended with expected resumption on 5 November.
