Gerard Lawlor, chief executive of the Northern Ireland Football League, has stated that any modification to the football calendar demands approval from at least three-quarters of member clubs.

The comments were made during an interview on BBC Radio Ulster after research indicated most players opposed moving the season start from August to May.

Lawlor explained that financial backing from European sources would reach every Premiership team via Uefa's solidarity funding mechanism, rather than benefiting only those competing in continental competitions.

He expressed hope that clubs currently playing in the Championship might also gain access to these funds in later years.

Consequently, the Irish League faces the prospect of losing its qualification spot for European competition after Northern Ireland dropped to 51st place in Uefa's coefficient ranking.

The league remains set to retain its current schedule absent a successful vote on the proposed changes.
