Learner drivers across Northern Ireland are facing limited choice and lengthy waits when trying to secure a practical test, as demand continues to outstrip the appointments immediately visible on the booking system. The Driver and Vehicle Agency releases its main allocation of car-test slots three months ahead.
BBC News NI reported that candidates in several areas were unable to find a suitable local appointment when new dates appeared. The DVA said demand continued to rise, adding pressure to a service that must match examiners, test centres and the different vehicle categories requiring appointments.
Official booking guidance says new Category B appointments are released on the first working day of each month. Extra slots can appear later when the agency adds resources or another candidate changes a booking, so a full calendar at one point does not necessarily mean no further appointment will become available.
The agency advises learners to consider a different test centre where travel is practical and to continue checking for cancellations. Saturday tests and selected Sunday sessions are available, although evening and weekend appointments carry a higher fee than the standard weekday car test.
Candidates should use the official nidirect booking service and avoid third-party sites that add administration charges. A booking requires a driving-licence number, date of birth, payment card and valid email address. The practical car test currently costs £65 on a weekday and £95 during evening or weekend sessions.
