The New Orleans Saints have confirmed the signing of two-time All-Pro placekicker Daniel Carlson to contest for the starting position.
Charlie Smyth remains the incumbent at the club, having taken over from Blake Grupe in November last year.
Smyth, who was born in Mayobridge and represented Northern Ireland before moving to Gaelic football, began his tenure with the Saints after replacing Grupe earlier this season.
During pre-season preparations, Smyth converted 12 of 16 field goal attempts while Blake Grupe failed to make any of his three tries.
In June, the Saints also signed Tanner Brown from the United Football League's Louisville Kings to add depth to their kicking options.
Brown missed a 39-yard attempt during the team's pre-season match against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday.
Smyth himself failed to convert from 52 yards in the previous loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Kellen Moore's squad has now moved for Carlson, who joins Smyth and Brown in the competition for the starting role.
