The Northern Ireland Troubles Bill received its second reading in the House of Commons and passed by 320 votes to 105. The legislation aims to replace the Legacy Act introduced under the previous Conservative government.
The bill establishes a Legacy Commission to investigate Troubles-related killings and a separate information recovery body. These measures were agreed upon in a joint framework with the Irish government.
Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn stated there was no direct threat to national security in the proposed legislation. He rejected claims that the bill granted any control or veto to the Irish government over the Legacy Commission.
