Orange Order parade proceeds after High Court rejects late challenge

The controversial procession, which caused severe disorder in the 1990s, is scheduled to move along Garvaghy Road following a ruling by Justice Humphreys.

A march organised by the Orange Order will take place on Sunday after a final legal decision was reached at Laganside courts.

The event has been permitted to proceed down Garvaghy Road despite objections raised in recent days.

Justice Humphreys dismissed an appeal lodged by the Grand Review and Review Committee of the Orange Order against an earlier High Court ruling.

That initial judgment required the Parades Commission's decision to allow the route to be upheld.

The original permission was granted with specific restrictions attached to the procession.

Disputes over the route have persisted for more than thirty years, with the order previously unable to use the path in July 1995.

Police were not deployed along the Garvaghy Road during the night before the event, though officers remained at other nearby locations.

The conflict between the order and authorities reached a critical point when tensions escalated into a stand-off in mid-1995.
