Voting has been delayed by one week in 19 municipalities affected by storms, including areas hit by flooding and infrastructure damage. The national electoral authority confirmed that only local postponements are permitted under law.
Storm Kristin contributed to a state of emergency in 69 of Portugal’s 308 municipalities. At least five fatalities were reported, and thousands of residents remain without power. The government maintained that nationwide postponement is not legally allowed.
Far-right candidate André Ventura called for a national delay, citing widespread need and disruption. The outgoing president and electoral authority rejected this, stating that emergency conditions alone do not justify postponement.
