The Prime Minister has spoken by phone with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with discussions covering trade, technology, community links and the situation in the Middle East.
According to the UK Government, the Prime Minister began by reflecting on the strength of the UK-India partnership and its impact on local communities across the United Kingdom.
He set out ambitions to further develop the relationship, including through the UK-India Vision 2035 framework and strong people-to-people links. The government said the Prime Minister also praised the contribution made by Indian communities in the UK.
Prime Minister Modi noted links between the two leaders’ home cities of Manchester and Ahmedabad in Gujarat, which he described as the Manchester of India.
On trade, the Prime Minister underlined the value of the recently introduced Free Trade Agreement between the UK and India, saying it would create opportunities for people in both countries.
The leaders also discussed the UK-India Technology Security Initiative and the potential for co-operation on advanced technology, including artificial intelligence. They then discussed the Middle East, agreeing to keep working closely on de-escalation and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
