The Department for Infrastructure has refurbished its Traffic Information and Control Centre in Belfast, describing the updated facility as a more collaborative working environment for the service responsible for monitoring key parts of Northern Ireland’s road network.
DfI said the centre operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Its continuous role includes the monitoring of urban roads and motorway networks, alongside the provision of traffic alerts and responsibilities connected with traffic signals.
The centre is used to monitor conditions across those networks and issue information for road users. The department said the work also supports traffic management and emergency coordination when incidents or changing road conditions require a response.
The refurbishment has been completed while the service continues to operate around the clock, according to DfI. The department said the changes to the working environment are intended to support collaboration among those based at the centre.
Traffic-signal responsibilities remain among the centre’s stated functions, alongside traffic monitoring and alerts. The facility therefore has a role both in observing conditions on the network and in providing information to those travelling on it.
The department’s announcement confirms that the Traffic Information and Control Centre remains in continuous operation following the refurbishment. DfI said its role covers urban and motorway monitoring, traffic alerts, signal-related duties and support for road-management activity across Northern Ireland.
