A conservation programme covering four war memorials in the Derry and Strabane council area is due to move on site from Monday. The work includes the Diamond monument in Derry as well as memorials in Strabane, Castlederg and Sion Mills.
The contract provides for specialist repair and restoration, new bronze plaques, wreath hangers and interpretation panels. Surrounding hard and soft landscaping is also included, allowing the programme to address both the monuments and the public spaces in which they stand.
Derry City and Strabane District Council has developed the work through its PEACEPLUS War and Peace project. Published project material places the capital works alongside historical research and cross-community programming intended to give visitors a wider account of the people, events and differing experiences represented at the sites.
The Diamond memorial is one of the most prominent structures in Derry city centre. The other three monuments provide local focal points across the wider district, so the programme has been organised as a connected scheme rather than four unrelated maintenance jobs.
The council's procurement record required a conservation-led team and set out the need to protect historic fabric while adding clear interpretation. Access arrangements may change around individual sites as the contractor proceeds. Any temporary restrictions will be displayed locally by the council and project team.
