Canada has cancelled a joint opening ceremony for the Gordie Howe International Bridge after the U.S. announced 50% tariffs on Canadian goods. The move follows President Trump's accusation that Canada unfairly discriminates against U.S. automobiles, alcohol, and dairy products.
A spokesperson for Canadian Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson stated it would be inappropriate to hold a celebratory event between the two countries in light of the U.S. trade action. Canada plans to hold its own ceremony on the same day.
The bridge is scheduled to open to traffic on July 27, though uncertainty remains over whether the U.S. will hold a separate ceremony. The 1.5-mile-long structure connects Detroit and Windsor and was financed by Canada through toll revenue.
