A truck carrying Afghan refugees returning from Pakistan overturned on a highway in Laghman Province, Afghanistan, on 30 May 2026. The accident occurred on the main road linking Kabul with Nangarhar province, according to provincial officials.
The crash killed 22 people and injured 36 others, most of whom were women and children. Among the dead were 10 children and five women, according to provincial health and government sources.
Officials reported the driver fell asleep, causing the vehicle to fall into a ditch. The refugees had recently returned from Pakistan, where a 2023 crackdown led to mass deportations and pressure on Afghan migrants to leave.
