Belfast City Council has initiated a two-week trial allowing large stores to open for extended hours on Sundays. The trial is limited to two Sundays during the Fleadh festival in August 2026.
The pilot follows an eight-week public consultation in which 82% of respondents supported extended opening hours. Retail workers were divided, with 48% in favour and 47% opposed.
Belfast Chamber CEO Clare Guinness described the trial as insufficient, calling it a partial measure. She stated the pilot should mark the start of broader discussions on Sunday economic activity.
