Ukraine's parliament approved the establishment of a national pantheon in Kyiv to serve as a site for state ceremonies, reburials, and memorials to national figures. The legal framework defines eligibility for inclusion based on contributions to the nation's identity and history.
The pantheon will not be limited to political or military leaders but may also include figures from culture, science, and religious life. Individuals convicted of crimes against state security, violations of international law, or associations with totalitarian regimes will be excluded.
Potential honorees include Stepan Bandera, Vasil Kuk, Mykhailo Omelianovych-Pavlenko, and Yevhen Konovalets, all of whom have controversial historical roles. The inclusion of figures linked to collaboration with Nazi Germany has prompted diplomatic tensions, notably with Poland.
