Ofcom has launched an investigation into X concerning complaints about the creation of deepfake sexualised images using its AI chatbot Grok. The regulator has authority to require compliance or impose fines of up to 10% of X's qualifying worldwide revenue if legal breaches are found. The UK government has indicated that all options, including ceasing use of the platform, remain under consideration. The Prime Minister's spokesman stated that the government's focus is on protecting children and removing abusive content immediately.
The UK will implement a law this week that criminalises the creation of non-consensual intimate images. The legislation will prohibit companies from supplying tools designed to generate such content. Technology minister Liz Kendall stated that X's measure restricting access to the image generation feature to paid subscribers was insufficient. She described the images as tools of abuse, disproportionately affecting women and girls.
Malaysia has temporarily blocked access to Grok, following Indonesia's earlier action. The European Commission is being engaged by Coimisiún na Meán over the issue. X has contacted Minister of State Niamh Smyth to arrange a meeting, after she previously requested one. The Children's Ombudsman, Dr Niall Muldoon, described the paywall update as ineffective, noting it merely adds a financial barrier to abuse.
