Information released by BBC News Northern Ireland reveals that recorded assaults at Maghaberry Prison have more than doubled over a four-year span.
Last year saw 149 such incidents logged, marking a stark departure from the 69 cases recorded in 2021.
Prison officers indicate that mounting pressure within the facility is becoming an escalating issue for both personnel and inmates.
Analysis of the data obtained via Freedom of Information requests suggests the escalation in violence has exceeded the rate of population growth.
Although overall figures show a rise, incidents involving prisoners attacking one another represent the most significant increase.
The Northern Ireland Prison Service reported that assaults on staff climbed from 43 cases in 2021 to 56 in 2025.
Broader statistics across the service show a 71% rise in recorded assaults at Magilligan and a 9% increase at Hydebank Wood during the same period.
It is noted that these records capture only those incidents formally reported to prison staff.
