Andy Burnham has been confirmed as the new leader of the British Labour Party. He will succeed Keir Starmer as prime minister on Monday.
Burnham won a by-election in Makerfield, a seat in northern England, following the resignation of his ally Josh Simons. The result demonstrated his ability to challenge Reform UK in a historically Labour stronghold.
He has pledged to build a united Labour movement and address a political culture he says does not work well enough for ordinary people. His leadership will face economic constraints and a review of social security costs due in the autumn.
