Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband met with Prime Minister Keir Starmer to urge him to set a timetable for his departure. The request followed Andy Burnham's victory in the Makerfield by-election.

Burnham defeated Reform UK's Robert Kenyon by 9,231 votes in the by-election. Labour's vote share rose by 9.61 percentage points in the seat.

Starmer stated he would not walk away from Downing Street and would stand in any leadership contest. He had not yet spoken directly with Burnham but sent a message of congratulations.
