Lionel Messi scored in the 29th minute of Argentina's 3–2 extra-time victory over Cape Verde, marking his 20th World Cup goal. This made him the first player to achieve 20 goals and 30 appearances in FIFA World Cup history.

Messi extended his record by scoring in eight consecutive World Cup matches, including the 2022 tournament. He now has 12 goals in this World Cup, leading the Golden Boot race.

His assist for the opening goal was provided by Lisandro Martínez, who made his first international assist. Messi's goal was his 124th for Argentina, second only to Cristiano Ronaldo.
