And Euston Street Primary School in inner east Belfast is now celebrating its 100th birthday.
The institution officially opened in July 1926, just in time to admit pupils for the new school term.
During World War Two, the school's basement served as the main air-raid shelter for the local community.
Although the building sustained damage in a later bombing raid, the underground space continued to keep people safe.
To mark the anniversary, current and former pupils gathered on an open day to sign their names on the walls of the historic basement corridors.
Among those returning were Barbara Best and Rosaleen Gilpin, who have been lifelong friends since they met at Euston Street as pupils in the 1940s.
Colin also attended from 1965 until 1972 and was back being shown round by Poppy.
The school gave shelter to the community during the devastating Belfast Blitz.
