Charlie Smyth has been released by the New Orleans Saints before the start of the next NFL campaign after failing to secure a spot on the kicking roster.
The decision follows a period of mixed results for Smyth during the Saints' preparation, with Carlson emerging as the preferred option in this competition.
Smyth enters the league having transitioned from Gaelic football at Mayobridge in Northern Ireland to American football through the NFL's international player pathway (IPP).
He assumed his position on the Saints' roster in November, replacing Blake Grupe, and remains eligible for retention on the practice squad as IPP participants are exempt from the standard 16-player limit.
Should the Saints choose not to retain him, Smyth retains the option to sign with another franchise if they believe he can contribute to their lineup.
NFL clubs have until Monday at 17:00 BST to officially sign released players, after which they may add individuals to their practice squads.
BBC Sport Northern Ireland reported that Smyth was waived following his loss in the kicking competition against Dan Carlson.
