Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has confirmed the appointment of eleven individuals to serve on the Historic Buildings Council.
The new appointments were announced by the Northern Ireland Executive on 9 October 2026.
Established in the 1970s, the council operates as an independent advisory body for the Department for Communities.
Its primary function involves offering guidance on proposals to list historic structures and matters concerning their conservation.
The group also advises district councils regarding the establishment or expansion of Conservation Areas.
Constituted under Section 198 of the Planning Act (Northern Ireland) 2011, the council provides expertise on the general condition of listed buildings.
The incoming members bring diverse backgrounds including community heritage development, district council experience, and specialist knowledge in building conservation.
Appointments are voluntary with a term running from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2029.
While no salary is provided, out-of-pocket expenses may be claimed by members.
Minister Lyons stated the new cohort would support the development of the Department's first Historic Environment Policy.
The Council requires that any political activity undertaken by its appointees be made public.
