Conservation work completed on two Carrickfergus Castle cannons

Eight participants are undertaking a year-long heritage skills programme as the Department for Communities plans repairs to all of the castle's cannons.

Two cannons removed from Carrickfergus Castle in July 2025 have received conservation work at the Department for Communities' Moira Depot.

The Department said repairs are planned for all the cannons at the castle, with completion hoped for by March 2027.

Eight participants are taking part in the 12-month All-Ireland Heritage Skills Programme, which combines formal training with work placements.

The Department's Conservation Works Team has also recruited eight apprentices — its first intake in 25 years — and expects to recruit a further three.
