DAERA Minister Andrew Muir MLA made the announcement today regarding the future of the agricultural initiative.
Since the programme began in 2021, the total area under cultivation fluctuated before reaching a peak of 802 hectares in 2024.
Production figures for 2026 show a reduction to 422 hectares of protein crops grown across Derry and beyond.
Spring field beans remain the primary crop cultivated, with spring peas serving as the secondary variety.
These legumes are specifically intended to enhance protein content within livestock feed rations.
An ongoing evaluation project aims to measure both environmental impacts and economic advantages for growers throughout the region.
The assessment work is scheduled to finish in May 2027 before any further decisions can be considered.
