Giovanni Castellucci, former chief executive of Autostrade per l’Italia (ASPI), was sentenced to 12 years in prison on 16 July 2026 for his role in the 2018 collapse of the Ponte Morandi in Genoa, which resulted in 43 fatalities. The conviction followed a four-year trial and was delivered by the Court of Genoa at first instance, with Castellucci already in custody due to a prior six-year sentence related to a 2013 highway accident.
The prosecution had sought an 18-year and six-month sentence for Castellucci, citing negligence in maintenance and failure to act on known risks. Other senior figures received shorter terms: Michele Donferri Mitelli, a former ASPI executive, was sentenced to 11 years, while Paolo Berti and Antonino Galatà, former ASPI and SPEA leaders respectively, each received five years and six months.
Mauro Coletta, former head of ministerial supervision, was sentenced to five years, with prosecutors having requested 10 years for him. ASPI and SPEA exited the criminal trial through a plea agreement involving a €30 million payment in damages.
