Egypt secured their first-ever World Cup last 16 appearance after defeating Australia in a penalty shootout. The match ended 1–1 after extra time, with Egypt advancing following a 4–2 victory in the shootout.

Emam Ashour scored the opening goal for Egypt with a header in the first half. Australia equalised when Mohamed Hany accidentally put the ball into his own net from a free-kick delivery by Aidan O'Neill.

Patrick Beach made a last-minute save to deny Egypt a winning goal in stoppage time. He was substituted before the penalty shootout, and Egypt’s four penalty takers all scored, while Australia missed two.
