Iranian officials have announced a three-day funeral plan for former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, with ceremonies scheduled in Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad. The events will precede his burial at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad.
The funeral in Tehran is expected to draw between 15 and 20 million mourners, according to an Iranian official. Preparations for the mourning and funeral ceremonies were delayed for months due to ongoing military hostilities and security concerns.
Khamenei was killed during a joint US-Israeli air operation targeting his compound in Tehran on February 28, 2026. His death, along with that of members of his family, occurred during the initial phase of the airstrikes.
