Iranian state media released footage showing the interior of Ali Khamenei's compound after it was destroyed in a joint US-Israel strike on 28 February 2026. The video displayed rubble, warped beams, and debris within the prayer room known as Imam Khomeini's Husseiniyah.
The compound was targeted during the first day of a multi-day operation by the United States and Israel. Ali Khamenei was killed in the strike, according to the source, and his son Mojtaba succeeded him.
A funeral procession for Khamenei began in Tehran on 28 February and arrived in Iraq on 8 July. Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi received the coffin at Najaf International Airport, where burial ceremonies were held.
