Kate O’Connor was in second place after two events of the women’s heptathlon at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, according to BBC Sport Northern Ireland. The position placed the Irish athlete near the head of the standings during the opening stages of the competition.

The women’s heptathlon is being contested across 14 and 15 August at Alexander Stadium. O’Connor’s second-place standing came after the first two events, with the multi-event contest continuing over the two scheduled competition days.

Birmingham is hosting the European Athletics Championships from 10 to 16 August. Alexander Stadium is the venue for the championships and for the women’s heptathlon in which O’Connor is competing for Ireland this week. The event forms part of the programme’s closing stages.

European Athletics maintains the official live results record for the women’s heptathlon at Birmingham 2026. That results service provides the competition record as the events are completed during the two-day contest at the stadium.

BBC Sport NI reported O’Connor’s standing after the opening pair of disciplines. Her place at that point was second, meaning the report concerned an intermediate position in a contest which has been scheduled to continue into 15 August.

The heptathlon requires the standings to be updated as its events are completed. O’Connor’s position after two events is therefore the verified position from the initial part of the programme, rather than the final outcome of the competition.

The championships have brought European track and field competition to Birmingham for seven days. The women’s heptathlon occupies two of those days, beginning on 14 August and reaching its scheduled conclusion on 15 August.

O’Connor’s early placing gives Ireland representation in the leading group recorded after two events. The official European Athletics system remains the primary record for the progression of the women’s heptathlon at Alexander Stadium.

The next confirmed stage for the women’s heptathlon is the remainder of its 14-15 August schedule. O’Connor enters that part of the programme from second place following the two events covered in the BBC Sport NI report.
