Linfield recovered from their opening-day setback by beating Glentoran 2-1 in the first Big Two meeting of the NIFL Premiership season at Windsor Park.
Darragh Leahy gave the Blues the lead in the 18th minute, finishing a move created by Adam Frizzell. That advantage survived into the interval as Glentoran searched for a route back into the contest.
Glentoran made their first change midway through the second half, with Ben Gallagher replacing Joseph Thomson in the 67th minute, but it was Linfield who found the next goal. Kirk Millar doubled the home side's lead in the 77th minute and left the visitors facing a difficult final stretch.
Jordan Stewart pulled one back for Glentoran in the first minute of stoppage time (90+1), only to be shown a red card a minute later. Linfield saw out the remaining moments to secure a 2-1 victory.
One of the more eye-catching names on Glentoran's team sheet was Elliott Morris. The former goalkeeper, who made 743 appearances for the club and is now its goalkeeping coach, was named among the substitutes in the No. 40 shirt as cover for Billy Crellin. Morris was not called upon.
The result was an important response from Linfield after their 3-0 home defeat by Ballymena United a week earlier. Glentoran, who had begun with a 2-0 win over Limavady United, suffered their first league loss of the campaign.
