The King has appointed Mr Nicholas Charrington, DL, as His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of the County of Essex, the Government has announced.
Mr Charrington will take up the post on the retirement of Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst, CVO, on 2 December 2026. The appointment was announced on 17 July.
Mr Charrington, 65, is a former High Sheriff. He is president of the Rural Community Council of Essex and a trustee of the Fowler, Smith and Jones Charity, which gives grants to organisations across the county.
He is also co-founder of Wild Arts, which stages operas in venues across the country and has a growing emphasis on outreach to children.
His previous roles include founding chair of the Essex Farm Attractions Network, chair of Essex Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group, and committee member of the Essex Rural Development Commission.
Mr Charrington lives with his wife Sheila near Colchester at Layer Marney Tower, which is a visitor attraction and venue for charity events. Mrs Charrington started the Essex Crafts Society and established Essex Houses and Gardens, a marketing body. They have four adult children.
