Andy Burnham is set to become the first Prime Minister to work from No10 North as the government opens a new Manchester base for economic policy and devolution.
The office, based at Heron House in Manchester city centre, is being described by the government as a situation room for growth. Ministers said it would bring local economic growth and devolution work together under one roof.
The Prime Minister is expected to work from No10 North each week, with other ministers also using the site regularly. The government said the move is intended to shift decision-making beyond Westminster and involve local leaders more closely.
Mr Burnham will chair the first meeting of the revived National Economic Council at No10 North on Friday. The meeting will bring together senior ministers and regional mayors, with attendance expected to vary depending on the issues being considered.
The council was first established in 2008 in response to an economic emergency. The government said its revival reflects the view that growth now requires urgent, co-ordinated action across departments, local leaders and other partners.
Ahead of the first meeting, the Prime Minister is also due to speak to business representative organisations including the Federation of Small Businesses, the CBI and the British Chambers of Commerce about growth, investment and jobs across the country.
